HR 6090

H.R.6090 was passed on May 1, 2024. This bill criminalizes speech which can be characterized as antisemitic, as defined by the International Holocaust Rememberance Alliance or IHRA, a lobbying group. The definition is not provided in the bill and may be changed in the future by the IHRA.

Besides the obvious implications to free speech, this has grave theological concerns. One of the classifications of antisemitic speech by the IHRA is

Using the symbols and images associated with classic antisemitism (e.g., claims of Jews killing Jesus or blood libel) to characterize Israel or Israelis.
This means portion of the Bible, for instance 1 Thessalonians 2:14-15

"For you, brothers, became imitators of the churches of God in Christ Jesus that are in Judea. For you suffered the same things from your own countrymen as they did from the Jews, who killed both the Lord Jesus and the prophets, and drove us out, and displease God and oppose all mankind by hindering us from speaking to the Gentiles that they might be saved—so as always to fill up the measure of their sins. But wrath has come upon them at last!"

Acts 2

“Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly that God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ.”

The Revelation of Jesus Christ 2

"These things says the First and the Last, who was dead, and came to life: 9 “I know your works, tribulation, and poverty (but you are rich); and I know the blasphemy of those who say they are Jews and are not, but are a synagogue of Satan."

Along with other passages and direct statements from our Lord and Savior.

I trust our WELS pastors will confidently proclaim the full counsel of God, and not treat this as a 'minor doctrine' which can be brushed over that the Gospel might prevail. But as we are in the world, we must hold our representatives accountable. You can check the yea's and nay's at the Office of the Clerk, and if necessary, rebuke your congressman.

The Senate is looking to pass the bill quickly, so please reach out to your senators and inform them of the concern for Christians in this country.

Much more can and should be said - about dispensationalism, Zionism, and the label 'antisemitism' itself. We'll get to it if we need to.

Keep calm and pray imprecatory psalms.
